MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama forward Augustine Rubit has been named one of 25 finalists for the Lou Henson Award, which honors the top mid-major player in college basketball, CollegeInsider.com announced Monday.
Rubit is the only player from the Sun Belt Conference on the list of finalists for the Lou Henson Award.
Leading the Sun Belt on the Boards
The Jaguars forward leads the Sun Belt in rebounding at 10.9 per game. He ranks second in the conference in scoring at 19.0 points per game and is also second in the league with 15 double-doubles this season.
Rubit has scored 30 or more points three times this season, including a career-high 34-point game. He has also already set a South Alabama record for free throws made in a single season.
About the Award
The award will be presented at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta, which is also hosting the men’s NCAA basketball Final Four this spring.
The honor is named for Lou Henson, the former head coach at Illinois and New Mexico State. Henson won 779 games, which ranks 11th in NCAA history, and is one of only 12 coaches to lead two different schools to the Final Four.
Season Context
South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference and plays its home games at the Mitchell Center in Mobile. Rubit’s selection gives the Jaguars a national representative as the regular season winds down and conference tournament play approaches.
