South Alabama Volleyball Wins Twice at Jaguar Classic; Soccer Match With Stetson Canceled

South Alabama volleyball beat Nicholls State and Jackson State at the Jaguar Classic to reach 6-4, while rain wiped out the soccer team's match with Stetson.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama volleyball won twice on the final day of the Jaguar Classic, beating Nicholls State and Jackson State on Saturday to improve to 6-4 after opening the home tournament with a loss to Southern Miss on Friday.

Volleyball Takes Two at Jaguar Classic

The Jaguars defeated Nicholls State 3-1 by set scores of 17-25, 28-26, 25-10, 25-13. They then outlasted Jackson State 3-2, winning 25-12, 20-25, 25-18, 16-25, 15-8.

South Alabama closes its non-conference tournament schedule next weekend at the Lady Panther Invitational in Prairie View, Texas, where it will face Nicholls State again on Friday, Sept. 18, the tournament’s opening day.

The Jaguars open Sun Belt Conference play at home on Friday, Sept. 25, against Florida Atlantic at 5 p.m. in the Jaguar Gym.

Soccer Match With Stetson Canceled

South Alabama’s soccer match against Stetson, scheduled for Sunday, was postponed because of lightning and later canceled after heavy rain left the field unplayable.

The Jaguars next travel to Atlanta to play Georgia State on Friday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. They then go to Columbia, S.C., to face South Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 20, in their final non-conference match.

South Alabama opens its Sun Belt schedule at Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark., on Friday, Sept. 25.

Football Continues Camp-Style Practice

Head coach Joey Jones and his staff will keep a preseason camp-style practice schedule this week before moving to game-week preparation on Monday, Sept. 21. The staff plans to continue adding passing plays to the offense during the week.

The Jaguars have three weeks between their season-opening game against Hargrave Military Academy and their second game, against Army Prep at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Army Prep Splits First Two Games

Army Prep, the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School, lost its opener 21-14 to the West Point junior varsity team, then won a high-scoring second game 46-43 over Hudson Valley Community College. Army Prep plays Nassau Community College this weekend before traveling to Mobile.

South Alabama is playing its first season of football.
