Katie Berry Sets South Alabama Saves Record as Arkansas State Wins Soccer Opener in Overtime

Goalkeeper Katie Berry made a school-record 18 saves in a 4-3 overtime loss at Arkansas State before South Alabama rallied for a 2-2 tie at UALR.

JONESBORO, Ark. — South Alabama goalkeeper Katie Berry set a school single-game record with 18 saves Friday night, but Arkansas State scored in overtime to beat the Jaguars 4-3 in the Sun Belt Conference soccer opener for both teams.

South Alabama took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on a goal by Landi Wilson. Arkansas State answered with two goals before halftime to lead 2-1.

The Jaguars tied it 2-2 in the 49th minute when Wilson assisted Brandi Smith. Arkansas State went back in front 3-2 in the 66th minute, and Smith scored her second goal of the night in the 75th minute to tie the match 3-3.

Arkansas State won it in the 96th minute on a goal off a corner kick. The loss dropped South Alabama to 2-7-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the Sun Belt.

Late Rally Earns Tie at UALR

On Sunday in Little Rock, the Jaguars rallied from two goals down to tie Arkansas-Little Rock 2-2.

UALR scored in the first minute and again in the 36th minute to lead 2-0 at halftime. South Alabama answered with two goals in less than three minutes late in the second half, from Liz Clark in the 82nd minute and Brandi Smith in the 84th. Neither team scored again.

The Jaguars are 2-7-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Sun Belt play. UALR is 3-6-1 and 0-1-1.

South Alabama returns to Mobile to host Western Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. at The Cage.

Volleyball Falls in Sun Belt Openers

The volleyball team opened Sun Belt play with two home losses at the Jaguar Gym. Florida Atlantic won Friday’s match in straight sets, 25-22, 25-20, 26-24. Florida International followed with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-17 win on Sunday.

South Alabama is 9-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The Jaguars travel next to Troy for a 7 p.m. match.

Coors Classic Schedule Released

South Alabama men’s basketball will face UAB in the first game of the 2009 Coors Classic doubleheader on Saturday, Dec. 19, the university and the GMAC Bowl announced Monday. The doubleheader will be televised on CSS.

The Jaguars and Blazers tip off at 5:30 p.m. Kansas State and Alabama play the second game, which will begin 30 minutes after the first game ends.
