The Southwest Mobile County Chamber of Commerce is selling raffle tickets for its annual Guns & Gear Giveaway, with sales running through Oct. 31.
Between Nov. 1 and Nov. 10, the chamber will raffle 10 guns and 10 gifts — one of each per day across the 10-day span.
How the Drawing Works
Winners will be selected through digital drawing software and announced at 10 a.m. each day.
The structural feature that makes this raffle unusual: all tickets are entered into the drawing each day, regardless of whether a ticket number was previously selected.
That rule changes the arithmetic considerably. A ticket holder is not eliminated by winning, and a ticket that does not win on Nov. 1 has the same odds on Nov. 2 as it did the day before. Every ticket has 10 chances at 20 prizes rather than a single chance at one.
Tickets are limited to 200.
That cap is what makes the odds meaningful. With a fixed ceiling of 200 tickets and 20 prizes awarded over 10 days, the ratio is favorable enough to make purchasing a ticket a genuine proposition rather than a donation with a theoretical upside.
Where the Money Goes
Proceeds benefit the SWMCC Foundation, which provides scholarships through its T.A.L.L. Scholarship Program.
Chamber foundations operating scholarship programs are a common arrangement in Alabama. A chamber of commerce is a business organization; a chamber foundation is the charitable entity through which it conducts community work, including scholarships for local students.
For students in southwest Mobile County, locally administered scholarships have an advantage beyond the money: the applicant pool is limited to the community, which makes the odds substantially better than for statewide or national awards.
Why the Ten-Day Format
The daily-drawing structure across 10 days is a deliberate design.
A single-drawing raffle produces one moment of interest and then ends. A 10-day sequence with a daily 10 a.m. announcement produces 10 of them, which keeps the event in front of participants and the chamber’s community for a full week and a half.
It also spreads the prizes among more winners, since a ticket holder who wins on day two remains eligible and a different holder is likely to win on day three. Twenty prizes distributed across 200 tickets reaches a meaningful share of the participants.
Firearm Raffles
Firearm raffles are a longstanding fundraising format for civic organizations, sportsmen’s groups and chambers across the South, and they are legal when conducted in compliance with applicable law.
Transfers of firearms to raffle winners are subject to federal law, which generally requires that the transfer be completed through a federally licensed dealer with the required background check. Organizations running these raffles typically arrange the transfer through a local dealer, and winners complete the process there rather than receiving a firearm directly at an event.
