Historical media report, published from archived WKRG coverage.
WKRG reported in July 2008 that its Mobile’s Makeover series received a national Edward R. Murrow Award for continuing coverage from the Radio-Television News Directors Association.
The series followed Mobile-area economic and industrial developments, including the planned ThyssenKrupp steel mill in North Mobile County and the disputed Northrop Grumman/EADS tanker project at Brookley Field. At the time, WKRG said the steel mill was expected to employ 2,700 people and that final approval of the tanker project could bring a $600 million facility and 1,500 jobs.
The station said its team had also received a regional Murrow Award and competed nationally from a field of thousands of entries. This is a historical account of the award and the projects as described at the time.
