Alabama House Passes Medical Cannabis Bill SB 46, Sending It Back to the Senate
The Alabama House passed SB 46, which would create a medical marijuana program; the bill returns to the Senate for final approval.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama House of Representatives has passed SB 46, a bill that would establish a statewide medical marijuana program. The bill now returns to the Alabama Senate for final approval.
What the bill would allow
If the Senate approves it and Gov. Kay Ivey signs it into law, the bill would allow people with a qualifying medical condition to purchase cannabis-derived products after receiving a recommendation from a doctor.
More than a dozen conditions would qualify a person for the program, including cancer, terminal illness, depression, epilepsy, panic disorder and chronic pain.
The bill would allow marijuana in forms such as pills, skin patches and creams, but not in smoking or vaping products.
Next step
Chey Garrigan of the Alabama Cannabis Industry Association discussed the parties involved in the legislation and the bill’s prospects as it heads back to the Senate.
