Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation anticipates beginning a resurfacing project on the Wallace Tunnel on Monday night, Sept. 20.
The project scope includes full resurfacing operations and guardrail improvements along the tunnel’s length, followed by the application of a high-friction surface treatment to the new asphalt. The work will extend approximately 600 feet on either side of the tunnel as well, covering the approach areas on both the Mobile and Baldwin County sides.
The Wallace Tunnel, which carries Interstate 10 traffic beneath the Mobile River, is one of the most heavily traveled stretches of highway in the state. The resurfacing work is expected to improve driving conditions and safety through the tunnel corridor.
ALDOT has not announced specific lane closure schedules for the project, but overnight work is typical for tunnel maintenance to minimize disruption to daytime traffic. Motorists should expect potential delays during the construction period and consider alternate routes such as the Bankhead Tunnel or the Cochrane-Africatown Bridge.
