BASF announced a $25,000 donation to the American Red Cross on Thursday to support Hurricane Sally recovery efforts across Mobile and Baldwin counties, joining a live telethon broadcast to make the pledge public.
Bob Mulholland, interim site director for BASF’s McIntosh location in Washington County, appeared on the Red Cross virtual telethon “Sally: The Road to Recovery” to present the gift on behalf of the company. The McIntosh facility, which produces performance chemicals, employs more than 600 people in the region.
“We know this donation will allow the Red Cross to continue to help in recovery efforts such as providing food, shelter, relief supplies, and emotional support,” Mulholland said. “Our hearts go out to those affected, and we gladly leverage our resources to assist where needed.”
Hurricane Sally made landfall near Gulf Shores in mid-September 2020 as a Category 2 storm, bringing torrential rain, storm surge and widespread wind damage to communities throughout south Alabama. The storm knocked out power to tens of thousands of households, flooded homes and businesses, and left many families needing immediate assistance with food, shelter and basic supplies in the days that followed.
The Red Cross telethon was organized to raise money quickly for those recovery efforts, bringing together local businesses, civic leaders and residents to contribute directly to relief work happening in Mobile and Baldwin counties. Corporate gifts like BASF’s help fund emergency shelter operations, distribution of food and water, and casework support for families working to rebuild.
BASF has long maintained a significant presence in Washington County, where its McIntosh plant is one of the area’s largest employers. Company officials said the donation reflects a broader commitment to supporting the communities where its workforce lives, particularly during times of crisis.
The Red Cross continues to coordinate volunteers and resources throughout the region as recovery from Hurricane Sally continues, with officials encouraging residents who need assistance, or who wish to contribute to relief efforts, to reach out to the organization directly.
