Port officials say Outokumpu ships approximately 230,000 tons of cargo through the Port of Mobile each year, underscoring the scale of the recycling loop the new containers are designed to support.

Outokumpu’s Calvert mill is one of the anchor operations of the North American stainless steel industry, producing stainless plate and other products for customers across the continent. Its location in Calvert, along the Tombigbee River north of Mobile, puts it within the port’s inland industrial corridor, where heavy industry and waterborne logistics have grown up together. A mill of that profile consumes scrap continuously, and a reliable inbound supply of stainless scrap from Mexico — moved in containers that fold flat for the trip north — fits directly into its production model.

The 230,000-ton annual figure gives a sense of the program’s potential. At that volume, even modest efficiency gains per shipment compound quickly across a year of sailings, and the empty-truck miles saved on Alabama highways between the port and Calvert add their own layer of savings.
