Gulf Shores Opens Applications for New Citizens Academy, Deadline Aug. 31
Gulf Shores is accepting applications through Aug. 31 for Gulf Shores 101, a new seven-week citizens academy beginning Sept. 15 that gives residents and business owners an inside look at city operations.
Gulf Shores residents and local business owners curious about how their city government actually works will soon have a chance to find out firsthand. The City of Gulf Shores is accepting applications for a new seven-week interactive citizens academy, Gulf Shores 101, that begins Sept. 15 and gives participants an inside look at city operations. The program costs $25, which covers dinner at each session, and enrollment is limited to 25 Gulf Shores residents and local business owners. Anyone interested in taking part must apply by the Aug. 31 deadline.
What a Typical Session Looks Like
Each weekly session runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with dinner provided to participants.
Sessions are built around an overview of a specific city department, paired with a tour or hands-on activity related to that department's work, followed by time for questions, conversation and networking with city staff and fellow participants. Rather than sitting through a single classroom presentation, participants will move through several of the city's actual facilities over the course of the program, including City Council Chambers, the Fire Training Room and the Police Training Room. Holding sessions in those spaces is meant to give attendees a more direct, hands-on sense of how city departments function day to day, rather than a purely academic overview.
Meeting the People Behind City Services
Over the seven weeks, participants will meet city leaders, explore key departments, tour important facilities, and build a deeper understanding of the essential services that keep the Gulf Shores community running, from public safety to day-to-day municipal operations. City officials describe Gulf Shores 101 as a friendly, informative and engaging option for a range of people: those passionate about local government, residents eager to get more involved in their community, or simply anyone curious about how decisions affecting Gulf Shores are made. Beyond the educational component, the program is also designed to help participants build meaningful relationships with city staff, city leadership and other residents who go through the program alongside them.
Update: City officials say Gulf Shores 101 is a newly launched program, with the seven-week course running every Tuesday from Sept. 15 through Oct. 27. Applications opened Aug. 11 and close Aug. 31, and selected participants will be asked to pay the $25 program fee. City Administrator Jon Walker said the program is meant to bring residents closer to the city's day-to-day work. "We are excited to offer Gulf Shores 101 as a way to bring our residents even closer to the work we do every day," Walker said.
"This program is designed to empower our community by providing transparency, strengthening connections, and helping citizens understand how they can play an active role in keeping Gulf Shores a vibrant and welcoming place to live."
Recognition at a November City Council Meeting
Once the seven-week course wraps up, participants will be formally recognized at the Nov. 2 Gulf Shores City Council meeting, with a dinner to follow the recognition. That closing event gives graduates a chance to be acknowledged publicly by city leadership for completing the program. Residents and business owners interested in taking part have until Aug. 31 to apply, with the inaugural group of 25 participants set to begin the program on Sept. 15.
