MOBILE, Ala. — The Home of Grace for Women will hold its annual fundraiser luncheon at Mt. Hebron Church Ministries in Mobile on Sept. 15, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The event highlights and honors women who have overcome addiction, placing their stories at the center of the program rather than treating them as illustration for an appeal.
What the proceeds support
Money raised at the luncheon allows the nonprofit to provide a recovery program that addresses addiction on three fronts: physical, mental and spiritual. That whole-person framing reflects a broad consensus in the recovery field that treating dependency as strictly a medical problem, or strictly a behavioral one, tends to leave meaningful gaps.
Residential recovery programs are expensive to operate, and organizations serving women face a particular set of costs — many participants arrive with children, trauma histories and interrupted employment records, each of which requires its own form of support beyond the core treatment.
Why the honoring matters
Programs that publicly recognize women in long-term recovery serve a purpose beyond fundraising. Addiction carries a stigma that falls unevenly, and it falls especially hard on mothers. An event that puts recovery on a stage, in front of a room, does quiet work against that stigma for everyone present — including women who are earlier in the process and have not yet been able to imagine themselves at the far end of it.
