USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park to Host Coast Guard Wreath-Laying Ceremony Honoring Fallen Members
A wreath-laying ceremony honoring Coast Guard members lost in the line of duty will be held Aug. 4 at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park's Aircraft Pavilion, with Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis speaking.
Mobile residents will have the chance to pay tribute to Coast Guard members who died in the line of duty when a wreath-laying ceremony takes place next week at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. The observance is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 8:30 a.m. at the park’s Aircraft Pavilion.
The ceremony is being organized to formally remember Coast Guard personnel who gave their lives while serving. Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis is expected to speak at the event.
A Site Steeped in Military History
USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park is home to the World War II battleship USS Alabama and the submarine USS Drum. The Aircraft Pavilion, where the wreath-laying will take place, houses a collection of historic military aircraft.
Coast Guard Veteran Reflects on the Tribute
Joe Snowden, who serves as Chief of Administrative Services and is himself a Coast Guard veteran, spoke about the significance of next week’s ceremony and the importance of formally honoring those who did not return home.
What to Expect at the Ceremony
The Aug. 4 event is expected to include the formal placement of a wreath in memory of fallen Coast Guard members, along with remarks from city and Coast Guard representatives. Further details on the full program have not been released. Members of the public who wish to attend are encouraged to arrive at the Aircraft Pavilion ahead of the scheduled start.
The Coast Guard’s Birthday and Its Mobile Ties
The ceremony falls on the Coast Guard’s birthday. The service traces its origins to Aug. 4, 1790, when Congress authorized a fleet of revenue cutters to enforce customs and tariff laws; the Revenue Cutter Service later merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service in 1915 to form the modern Coast Guard.
Mobile has a close connection to the service: Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, located at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, is where the Coast Guard trains its pilots on the aircraft they fly.
