A member of the Dauphin Island Town Council is facing criminal charges after state authorities say he left the scene of a collision and was later found to be driving under the influence.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said Gene C. Fox, 47, was behind the wheel of a 2001 Toyota 4Runner when it collided with a 2007 Dodge Charger on Wednesday, May 18 on Dauphin Island Parkway. Investigators say Fox drove away from the crash before Dauphin Island police stopped his vehicle. Officers held Fox until state troopers arrived.
According to ALEA, Fox asked for medical attention while officers waited for troopers and was taken to a local hospital. He then declined treatment and left the hospital as troopers were working to obtain a search warrant.
Fox was arrested Friday, May 20, and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of a crash. The charges are allegations at this stage, and the case will proceed through the court system.
Fox is listed as a councilman for the Town of Dauphin Island on the town’s website. It was not immediately clear whether the town plans any action regarding his council seat.
