Crews with the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD) responded to a structure fire near Raven Drive and Cardinal Drive West on Friday night, according to fire officials.
MFRD said crews were dispatched around 9:36 p.m. to an abandoned, two-story apartment structure. Heavy flames were showing throughout the building when firefighters arrived on scene, the department said.
Officials said there were no signs that anyone was inside the building at the time of the fire.
Vacant and abandoned structures can pose particular challenges for firefighters, since crews often have limited information about a building’s interior layout or structural condition before entering to knock down flames. Departments typically treat vacant-structure fires with caution, working to confirm no occupants are present while containing the blaze to prevent it from spreading to nearby properties.
This is a developing story, and details including the cause of the fire and any damage estimates were not immediately available.
