Firefighters responding to an apartment complex fire

Fire Investigators Rule Parklane Apartments Blaze Intentional

James Bullard, July 25, 2014July 16, 2026

Fire investigators in Mobile have determined that a fire that broke out at Parklane Apartments earlier in the week was set on purpose, according to officials with Mobile Fire-Rescue Department.

The blaze started before dawn, around 4:45 a.m. on a Wednesday, inside a second-floor unit at the complex located near the Greater Gulf State Fairgrounds. A woman living in the apartment escaped by climbing over her balcony railing and dropping to the ground below, suffering a back injury and minor burns in the process.

Department spokesman Steve Huffman said investigators believe the resident set fire to her own couch, and that the incident appears to be tied to an ongoing struggle with mental illness rather than any criminal intent involving others. Huffman noted the woman is known to experience auditory hallucinations, and that fire crews do not suspect anyone else played a role in starting the blaze.

Neighbors described a chaotic scene as emergency crews arrived, with at least five fire engines and two ambulances responding to the complex in the pre-dawn hours. Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained largely to the couch and the immediate area, though smoke and heat damage spread through the rest of the unit. Damage from the fire is estimated at roughly $20,000.

With the cause now officially classified as intentional, the matter has been turned over to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide how to proceed. Huffman said that in cases like this, where a fire appears linked to a mental health crisis rather than malice, authorities often lean toward connecting the individual with treatment and support services rather than pursuing criminal charges.

The incident adds to a string of apartment and residential fires that have kept Mobile-area fire crews busy this summer, and comes as local officials continue to highlight the intersection between untreated mental illness and public safety incidents in the community. Fire officials did not indicate whether the resident faced any immediate danger requirements or evaluation as a result of the incident, but said the department’s primary concern was ensuring she received appropriate care following her injuries.

No other residents of the apartment complex were reported injured, and the building remained otherwise occupied following the fire. Mobile Fire-Rescue reminded residents that furniture fires can spread rapidly in enclosed living spaces and urged anyone experiencing a mental health crisis to seek help rather than resorting to dangerous behavior.
