Monroe County Museum to Host Storytelling, Genealogy Workshop Saturday

The Monroe County Museum will host a workshop on storytelling and genealogy Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., aimed at helping participants begin documenting their family history.

Participants are encouraged to start with a single person or memory as a first step toward building out their family’s story. The class will be led by Cossondra Dunn Howard. A $25 fee includes lunch, and space is limited to 15 spots. Those interested in attending can call the museum to reserve a spot.

About the Museum and Family Research

The Monroe County Museum operates the Old Courthouse Museum in Monroeville. Construction on that courthouse began in 1903, and its courtroom served as the model for the courtroom in Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” and was recreated on a Hollywood soundstage for the 1962 film.

For those beginning genealogy research, federal census records are a common starting point. Individual census records are released to the public 72 years after each count, which is why the 1950 census, released in 2022, is the most recent one available.
