Bellingrath Gardens in Theodore has once again turned its 65-acre estate into a sprawling holiday spectacle, and this year the display is drawing attention well beyond South Alabama, earning a spot among a national list of the country’s top public holiday light shows.
Now in its 19th year, Magic Christmas in Lights features more than three million individual lights arranged across roughly 1,000 separate displays scattered throughout the garden grounds. The sheer scale of the operation is staggering when broken down: organizers rely on 14,000 light strands, 377,000 replacement bulbs, five miles of steel framework for set pieces, 100,000 twist ties, and 7,700 extension cords to keep the entire display running each season.
The show has become a fixture of the holiday season for families across the Gulf Coast region, drawing visitors from across South Alabama and beyond who make the trip to Theodore specifically to walk the illuminated garden paths. Its longevity, now spanning nearly two decades, has helped cement it as one of the signature holiday traditions in the Mobile area, alongside newer additions to the region’s seasonal offerings.
The display’s recognition on a national stage puts Bellingrath Gardens in the company of other well-known holiday attractions around the country, including displays in Riverside, California; St. Augustine, Florida; James Island near Charleston, South Carolina; and the Coeur d’Alene Resort in Idaho. That kind of company reflects the scale and craftsmanship that goes into Bellingrath’s annual display, built and maintained by a dedicated team working months in advance of the season’s opening.
Preparing a display of this magnitude requires significant lead time. Staff typically begin planning and staging elements for the following year’s show almost as soon as the current season wraps, testing electrical components, replacing worn strands, and refining the layout across the sprawling garden footprint to keep the experience feeling fresh for repeat visitors.
Beyond the holiday lights, Bellingrath Gardens remains one of the region’s most recognized attractions year-round, known for its azaleas, camellias, and other seasonal blooms across its historic grounds along the Fowl River. The Christmas display adds an additional layer of visibility for the estate during a season when many other regional attractions are dormant.
Magic Christmas in Lights continues nightly through Jan. 3, giving visitors well into the new year to experience the display before the estate transitions back to its spring garden programming. The show’s growing national profile is likely to bring even more out-of-town visitors to the Mobile area in future seasons, adding to the local tourism economy during what is traditionally a slower travel period for the Gulf Coast.
