The ‘Human Elf on the Shelf’ Returns to Spread Holiday Cheer Around Mobile

James Bullard, December 24, 2014

A costumed character known around Mobile as the Human Elf on the Shelf made his second annual holiday appearance this December, popping up in unexpected corners of the city to the delight of residents who have come to look forward to his return each year.

The character is the alter ego of local radio personality Greg Hill, who dons an oversized elf costume and turns up at various spots around town in the days leading up to Christmas, mimicking the popular “Elf on the Shelf” tradition where families move a small toy elf to a new perch each night. Instead of a shelf-sized figurine, Mobile got a full-grown elf showing up in real locations around the city.

This year’s tour included a stop at the intersection of Airport Boulevard and McGregor Avenue, where a passing fan gifted the elf an umbrella, and a festive appearance in downtown Mobile’s Bienville Square. The elf also made a visit to the University of South Alabama Children’s & Women’s Hospital, posing with staff at a nurses’ station and stopping by to visit young patients during his rounds, including at least one child from as far away as Washington County who got a memorable holiday surprise.

The tradition has grown into a small but beloved piece of the local holiday calendar, with residents sharing photos of each sighting on social media and local radio audiences tracking where the elf might turn up next. Unlike a scripted publicity stunt, the appearances tend to have a spontaneous, community-driven feel, with fans and businesses often documenting the visits themselves and sharing the results.

For a costumed character built around a simple gag, the Human Elf on the Shelf has managed to tap into something families across the Mobile area genuinely enjoy each December: a lighthearted surprise that turns an ordinary errand or hospital visit into an unexpected holiday moment. The hospital stop in particular stood out this year, offering a bit of levity to patients and staff during a season that can otherwise be difficult for families spending time in a children’s hospital.

As in past years, there was no formal schedule announced for where the elf might appear next, part of what locals say makes the character’s holiday visits fun to follow. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out around Mobile in the final stretch before Christmas, since the elf’s past appearances suggest he tends to show up where people least expect him.
