MOBILE, Alabama – For the eighth consecutive year, the owner of a Mobile Firehouse Subs location is organizing a holiday tradition aimed at thanking the first responders who spend Christmas working instead of at home with their families.
The owner, who runs the Firehouse Subs location at Grelot and Hillcrest roads, said the project began simply out of a sense of gratitude. Feeling fortunate for what his business and family had, he said he wanted to find a way to pass some of that appreciation along to people who rarely get recognized for working through the holidays.
The effort has grown into a well-organized community operation each December. Gift bags donated by Hallmark are filled with handwritten Christmas cards made by local schoolchildren, paired with fresh sandwiches prepared by the shop owner and his staff in the days leading up to the holiday.
On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, roughly 25 volunteer families fan out across the Mobile area to deliver the goodie bags to more than 44 different public safety agencies. In total, the effort provides a hot holiday meal to more than 350 firefighters, paramedics, police officers, 911 dispatchers and other public safety personnel who remain on duty while much of the community celebrates at home.
The shop owner described the deliveries as a small but meaningful gesture for workers who rarely receive that kind of recognition on a holiday. He said the goal isn’t just the meal itself, but the message it sends about how much the community values the sacrifices first responders make, particularly on days when most people are home with family.
The tradition reflects a broader pattern of local businesses stepping up during the holiday season to support the public safety workforce that keeps the region running around the clock, regardless of the calendar. Dispatch centers, fire stations and police precincts across Mobile County remain staffed every day of the year, and organizers of efforts like this one say small gestures of appreciation can make a meaningful difference for employees working overnight or holiday shifts away from their own families.
Volunteer families involved in the delivery effort range from longtime participants who have taken part since the program’s early years to newer volunteers looking for a hands-on way to give back during the holidays. Organizers say interest in participating has grown steadily as word of the program has spread throughout the Mobile-area business and volunteer community over the past eight years.
