Emergency response lights at the scene of a road crash at night

Driver Killed, Mobile County Deputy Hurt in Rangeline Road Crash

James Bullard, December 15, 2014July 18, 2026

A Mobile County sheriff’s deputy was hurt and another driver was killed in a head-on collision on Rangeline Road early one Thursday morning, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.

The wreck happened near Hamilton Boulevard during the pre-dawn hours. The deputy was driving along Rangeline Road when his vehicle collided with an oncoming car, said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lori Myles. The driver of the other vehicle, who was not immediately identified, died at the scene.

Early accounts pointed to the other motorist crossing into the wrong lane. “We do have witnesses saying the deceased was driving on the wrong side of the road,” Myles said. She emphasized that the deputy was not responding to a call or engaged in a pursuit at the time. “The deputy was just driving — he wasn’t in a chase or anything like that,” she said.

Emergency crews took the deputy to a local hospital, where he was treated for cuts and was expected to make a full recovery. “He doesn’t have anything life-threatening but he’s shaken up,” Myles said.

The crash drew a large response from several agencies. Sheriff’s deputies, Mobile police officers and Alabama State Troopers all reported to the scene, along with medical personnel from Mobile Fire-Rescue Department. Fire-Rescue Capt. Brian Gilliland confirmed the multi-agency turnout as first responders worked to secure the area and tend to those involved.

Authorities shut down Rangeline Road in both directions shortly after the collision was reported, and officials did not immediately say how long the closure would remain in place. Drivers in the area were forced to find alternate routes during the morning hours while crews cleared the roadway.

Responsibility for determining what led to the crash fell to the Mobile Police Department, which took over the investigation. Head-on collisions on busier corridors like Rangeline Road often prompt renewed calls for caution, particularly during the low-visibility conditions common in the early morning. As of the initial reports, no further details had been released about the driver who died.
