Traffic on Highway 43 in Mobile County, Alabama

Mobile County Considered Transit Options for Highway 43 Construction Traffic

James Bullard, July 7, 2008

Historical report, published from archived WKRG coverage.

In July 2008, a Mobile County commissioner said a mass-transit system might help ease growing traffic congestion along U.S. Highway 43 in the northern part of the county, according to an archived WKRG report.

Commissioner Merceria Ludgood cited traffic increases linked to construction of the ThyssenKrupp plant in Calvert. At the time, ThyssenKrupp had about 700 construction workers on site, and the company said construction could eventually involve as many as 7,000 workers a day.

Workers and nearby residents interviewed by WKRG described bumper-to-bumper morning traffic and expressed mixed support for a possible transit option. Suggestions included a pickup location near Hank Aaron Stadium. This is a historical report on a proposal and conditions at that time, not a current traffic or transit notice.
