Calm bay water near Orange Beach, Alabama

Orange Beach Increased Water Testing After 2010 Corexit Report

James Bullard, August 19, 2010

In August 2010, WKRG reported that Orange Beach officials planned more extensive water testing after a resident submitted samples from Cotton Bayou to a Mobile chemist.

According to the report, the chemist’s results indicated the samples contained the dispersant Corexit. City officials said they would conduct additional testing in Cotton Bayou and other locations to determine whether the substance was present.

The report reflected a developing local environmental concern during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response. The resident’s sample result was not presented as the final determination for the bayou.

This is a historical account of a 2010 report and its attributed test result. It is not current environmental or health guidance.
