Runners covered in colorful powder during a 5K race in downtown Mobile

Color Run and Health Fair Fill Downtown Mobile Parks Saturday

James Bullard, October 15, 2014

Three downtown Mobile parks turned into a hub of health and fitness activity Saturday as thousands of runners, walkers and health-conscious residents converged for a color-themed 5K race alongside a citywide wellness fair happening just blocks away.

The race, often billed as one of the “happiest” 5K events on the running circuit, drew a little more than 3,000 participants to downtown Mobile, according to the event’s race director. That turnout marked a modest dip from the roughly 6,000 runners the event typically attracts in other cities, though organizers said a late surge of registrations in the days before the race helped boost the final numbers. Similar races were held the same day in cities including San Diego, Atlantic City and towns in New Hampshire.

Runners gathered on the east side of Mardi Gras Park before setting off on a three-mile course winding through the city streets. Along the route, participants passed through four separate “color zones,” each themed around a different colored powder that left runners covered in streaks of blue, purple, pink and yellow by the finish line — a deliberate contrast to the plain white T-shirts most wore at the starting line.

A few blocks away in Bienville Square, a separate health fair drew crowds as part of a citywide push to encourage more active lifestyles among Mobile residents. The fair’s organizer, who leads a local wellness campaign, said the timing alongside the color run was intentional, designed to let the two events reinforce each other’s message about fitness and healthy living. The square’s regular Saturday farmers market added to the day’s foot traffic in the area.

The wellness campaign behind the health fair traces its roots to one organizer’s personal health journey, which began years ago after she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis while significantly overweight. After working to get in shape herself, she opened a local gym and eventually pitched a citywide fitness initiative to Mobile’s mayor, who signed off on the effort earlier in the year.

Saturday’s fair drew support mainly from area hospitals and health-related sponsors, who set up booths offering free health screenings to attendees. Organizers said a separate weight-loss challenge, a citywide competition encouraging residents to collectively shed pounds, is set to relaunch in January.

“It’s about empowering the citizens of Mobile to take charge of their health and physical fitness and education,” the campaign’s founder said, describing the effort as one that starts with individual families before spreading into the broader community. Organizers of both Saturday events said they hope to make the joint fitness weekend a recurring fixture on Mobile’s calendar in future years.
