Saraland police released the identity of a man accused of stealing a vehicle, firing shots at officers, and later driving a stolen tractor through a shed door in an attempt to flee during a chase in the Turnerville community.
Authorities identified the suspect as a 40-year-old man from Panama City, Florida, who was arrested after being treated for injuries at Springhill Medical Center. Police said he bit one of the arresting officers during the arrest, adding another charge to an already lengthy list stemming from the incident.
According to Saraland police, the incident began after officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the Turnerville community. Officers located the vehicle behind a residence, but the driver crashed it into a storage building on the property before officers could make contact. Police say the man then went inside an enclosed shed and began firing gunshots at officers stationed outside, turning what began as a routine stolen-vehicle call into an active threat to responding officers.
The suspect subsequently drove a tractor through the shed door in an apparent attempt to escape the scene. He later abandoned the tractor in a wooded area near the property, where a police K-9 unit tracked him down after an extended search. An Alabama Law Enforcement Agency helicopter also assisted ground units in locating the suspect during the search.
He faces a lengthy list of charges stemming from the incident, including two counts of first-degree theft of property, three counts of third-degree burglary, unlawful breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, one count of second-degree assault, and two counts of attempted murder tied to the gunfire directed at officers. Bail information was not immediately available following his arrest.
The incident put Saraland’s police department, along with state law enforcement support, through an extended search-and-recovery operation in a rural pocket of Mobile County, underscoring the risks local officers can face responding to what begins as a routine stolen-vehicle call. No officers were reported seriously injured in the exchange of gunfire, though the encounter left the department relying on multiple outside resources, from K-9 units to aerial support, to safely bring the pursuit to a close.
